Teaching Writing (A Language Arts, Process Writing, Integrated Skills Approach)

Activity: Lesson Observation and Analysis

Watch the following lesson after referring to the lesson plan, teaching materials and related texts. All those materials were given to you class on 8th Nov 2018 and can also be found linked here. The song that is played in the lesson is edited out, so a version of it is included in the music video below. 

After observing the video of the lesson, answer the 7 discussion questions about the lesson on the worksheet and complete a brief 2+2 analysis. The questions on the additional worksheet "Group Discussion: Teaching Writing" are for your reference only and do not need to be completed.

The hardcopy of the completed questions and 2+2 will be collected in class on Thurs, 22nd November.

  1. There were lots of good things about this lesson, most notably for me, was the wide variety of texts from different sources about love. It was really good when she uses gap fills in her speech but she could have used the board or a PPT a bit more. The use of the board would have been helpful when setting the question at the beginning of the lesson as if student don’t hear or understand, they would get easily lost from the start.
    There was too much TTT for an integrated skills lesson, even too much for a listening lesson. It may be better for the students if the example demos of texts were delivered by someone other than her; if a recording or a video does not exist as a demo then she may want to rethink the text to one that does exist or get a recording of another teacher (perhaps a NET, LET or friend) or get an older student. An older student would allow the students to see that it is achievable and aspire to it.
    Over all the student were engaged and learning took place. With only a few exceptions, which the students weren’t able to notice, her English was good.
